Valentine and Chickadee Luncheon Photos

Both annual RTO social events of the winter were very well-received by those in attendance. The food was particularly singled out for compliments to the caterer/chefs.
The musical entertainment provided before and after the Valentine’s meal warranted many positive compliments too.

Plan to join us next year!

2017 Flavours of Fall

Flavours of Fall, a combined birthday/anniversary party to mark milestones for both Canada and RTO, brought together members from all parts of District 18 to enjoy an evening of camaraderie, fine food representing regions across Canada, and sublime music by harpist, Angelica Ottewill.

Guest speaker Sharon Laurence, author and retired teacher, shared stories from her life helping to protect wolves at the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre. Lucky door prize winners were able to take home copies of books about wolves written by her late husband, one of Canada’s leading naturalist writers, R.D.Lawrence, as well as copies of her 150th project: Canadian Culinary Treasures 1867-2017.

2016 AGM District 18

May 26th, 2016

Max Radiff leaving District 18 Executive posts. Thank you for many years of service.

Max Radiff leaving District 18 Executive posts. Thank you for many years of service.

In spite of the blustery day, all was light and friendly inside the Lindsay Golf and Country Club at the A.G.M. The regular business meeting was smoothly conducted by our out-going President,Wayne Cooper, with the able assistance of Max Radiff. The current executive were all thanked for their many on-going efforts on behalf of District 18, with particular thanks to Max for his many years of service on both the Executive and as a Senator for RTO, and to our retiring Communications Officer Bruce Peck. Bruce and his wife Debbie have done a wonderful job with our standard-bearing newsletter Bell Free and our expanded website http://www.rtoero-district18.com/ . Thank you and congratulations to both Max and Bruce on jobs very well done.

2016 AGMThe unit meetings were brief, and resulted in several vacant positions being filled. Thanks to all who volunteered. The position of 1rst Vice-President for the Kawartha Lakes unit is still open. If you’re interested in working on the Executive with a great group of people, contact our new President, Roberta Fuller. She’ll be happy to hear from you.

With all reports given and received, and motions carried and passed, we got down to the serious business of eating a fabulous lunch prepared by the LGCC staff.

Rick Fines, provided delightful entertainment at our Spring AGM

Rick Fines, provided delightful entertainment at our Spring AGM

The highlight of the day was the entertainment provided by Rick Fines, a talented musician, songwriter and historian from Peterborough. We were treated to a finely tuned history of the 12 Bar Blues music traditions in North America, from the call-and-response hollers of plantation workers in the South through the Blues, Ragtime, Swing, Jazz and the global phenomenon of Rock and Roll. We could have listened for hours! Thanks to Pres. Roberta for arranging this delightful addition to coffee, tea and dessert. Rick was the icing on the cake.

Many thanks to all who participated in the A.G.M.to make it such a successful day.  ~  by Cheryl Cohoon, 2nd Vice President

Chickadee Luncheon – January 19, 2016

District 18’s annual “Chickadee Luncheon” initiated 16 years ago by former past-president Louise Cooper was held this year at Heather Lodge in Carnarvon.

2016-chickadeeDespite the freezing cold and bitter winds outside, thirty-three people enjoyed the warm ambiance and a welcoming cup of hot apple cider while quietly greeting friends old and new.

Our lunch was absolutely delicious–start to finish and beautifully presented and served by a very attentive and accommodating staff.

The door prize, a charming stained-glass hummingbird was donated by VP Roberta Fuller and created by her sister.  Georgiena Boyle won the prize.

After lunch, our guest speaker, Sheila Ziman, gave a short presentation about our county’s initiative in sponsoring the relocation of a refugee family.  Sheila let us know that there are many ways of helping, given our abilities.

Many thanks to our members from Kawartha Lakes and Tony Dymott who braved the brutal temperatures to attend.

President’s note: Cheryl provided valet service to help members park and manoeuvre their way to the lodge.
