Message from the Provincial Office to former teachers in Peterborough County School Board a.k.a Kawartha Pineridge District School Board

The President and the Health and Safety Officer from the local ETFO from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (formerly the Peterborough County School Board) contacted Harold Brathwaite, the executive director of RTO, to make him aware of a situation they believe will be of interest to our members who may have taught within their schools in the past 40-50 years. They have asked that the following information be shared with retired members.

Within this school board, there have been a number of schools that have vermiculite (a potential carcinogen) insulation leaking into occupied spaces (classrooms, storage rooms, gyms). This vermiculite contains asbestos and poses a health risk. ETFO has reported this to the Ministry of Labour and continues to encourage the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board to take action to protect workers. ETFO has asked RTO/ERO to share this information with past employees who may have been exposed during their time in schools.

RTO/ERO feels obliged to share this information with you and asks that if you have any questions or concerns to please contact the ETFO of Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB for further actions you can take.

The Lindsay Gallery (Volunteer) Education Committee Chair

Background

The Lindsay Gallery currently partners with the Lindsay Branch of the City of Kawartha Lakes Library to host school visits from children of all grade levels, with visits primarily from grades JK – Grade 5. Over 400 students, teachers and parents visited the Gallery in June 2011, with another 225 visiting in October and November 2011.

Overview of a Visit

The class generally starts in the library with stories and songs that relate to the subject of the exhibit. The class then travels up to the Gallery. Discussions start with proper behavior in a Gallery setting, and then the children are given the opportunity to explore the exhibit. The group reconvenes and a discussion takes place highlighting aspects of the work that relates to the specific curriculum of that grade level. The children then travel back down to either the children's section of the library or to the meeting room in the basement to do a guided art activity. For example, students in Grade 1, after seeing Bronson Smith's Abandoned Outports and Disappearing Barns exhibit, were asked to paint a picture of a barn and the animals that they might find in the barn. Students in Grade 4/5, after seeing the 'Inspirations' Permanent Collection Exhibit, were asked to gain inspiration from one of the pieces and create a new work of art using oil pastels, markers, crayons, coloured pencils and paint.
Total Visit Time: 1.5 - 2 Hours.
